Driveway company

A driveway company for Westbury-on-Trym

Westbury-on-Trym has every kind of frontage, from the older streets around the village centre to the inter-war semis and bungalows further out, and many front gardens have been turned over to parking. Plenty of them sit on a slope. A driveway here has to carry cars every day, shed rain without sending it to the house or the road, and still look right beside the property.

What decides whether it lasts is the part you never see. As driveway installers we put as much care into the dig-out, the sub-base, the edges and the drainage as into the surface on top.

New driveways in resin, tarmac and block paving

Whichever finish you choose, the groundwork is the same: dug out, built on compacted stone and drained. Here is how the three compare.

How the three driveway surfaces compare
SurfaceLookUpkeepDrainageSuits
Resin Smooth natural stone with no joints A sweep and an occasional rinse Through the surface, on the right base Level or gently sloping drives where the finish matters most
Tarmac Smooth and uniform, usually black Very little beyond a sweep Falls to a border, drain or soakaway Long drives, shared access and larger areas
Block Paving Patterned, with a contrasting border Sweep, and re-sand the joints when needed Falls to a border or drain, or permeable blocks Most homes, and drives that are turned on every day

Patios and gardens

Patios are the work you will see most of in our photos, and every one of them is our own job. The garden around the paving is part of it too.

How we lay a new driveway

  1. We come and look

We measure the area, check the levels and where rain goes now, and ask how many cars the driveway has to take.

  2. You get a free quote

A price for the work, with the surface, the edging and the drainage set out so you can see what is included.

  3. Dig out and build the base

The old surface is lifted and the ground dug to depth. Stone goes down in layers, each one compacted, and the edges are fixed.

  4. Lay the surface

Resin, tarmac or blocks go down on the finished base, with falls set so that water runs where it should.

  5. Tidy up and hand over

Waste is taken away and the site swept. We walk round it with you and explain how to look after the new surface.

In customers' words

What customers have said about AFL

An old patio taken up and replaced with Indian sandstone, with the manhole covers infilled to match and a grey edging. The customer said the two of them worked for three days, asked all the right questions to make sure it was what was wanted, and that they would call again for the rest of the garden.

Patio customer, on Bark

A small patio area. The customer said it looked superb and went beyond what they had expected, and described Finley as professional, approachable and friendly from the start.

Patio customer, on Bark

A driveway that had become a mess, cleaned back so well that neighbours asked whether a new one had been laid. The customer called the service polite and professional and the work brilliant.

Questions

Driveway questions, answered

What people ask before having a new driveway laid in Westbury-on-Trym.

How much does a new driveway cost in Westbury-on-Trym?

It depends on the size of the area, the surface, how much has to be dug out and what drainage is needed. As a rule tarmac costs the least per square metre, with block paving and resin above it because of the materials and the labour. We do not work from a price list. We visit, measure up and give you a free quote for your driveway.

Do I need planning permission for a new driveway in Bristol?

Usually not. In England you can pave a front garden of any size without planning permission if the surface lets water through, as resin bound surfacing and permeable block paving do, or if the rain runs to a lawn or border on your own land. Covering more than five square metres with a surface that does not drain needs permission. Some streets in and around Westbury-on-Trym are in conservation areas, where extra rules can apply, so it is worth checking with Bristol City Council before work starts.

Which is best: a resin driveway, tarmac or block paving?

There is no single best surface. A resin driveway gives a smooth, modern finish that drains through. Tarmac is good value over a large area and needs very little upkeep. Block paving is the all-rounder: hard-wearing, repairable and available in many colours. We will tell you which we would choose for your house and why.

How long does it take to lay a new driveway?

Most domestic driveways take from a few days to a couple of weeks, depending on the size, how much needs digging out, the surface and the weather. Your quote says how long we expect your job to take, and we keep you posted if rain holds things up.

Do I need a dropped kerb for a new driveway?

If you will drive across a pavement or verge to reach it, yes. A dropped kerb, also called a vehicle crossing, is separate from the driveway and has to be approved by the highway authority. In Westbury-on-Trym that is Bristol City Council. In Filton, Patchway and Bradley Stoke it is South Gloucestershire Council. If you already have a dropped kerb, nothing changes, and we lay the new driveway to line up with it.

How soon can I park on my new driveway?

Block paving can be used as soon as we have finished. New tarmac needs a few days to harden before cars go on it, and longer in hot weather. A resin driveway can usually be walked on the next day and driven on a day or two after that. We give you exact guidance for your driveway when we hand it over.

My front garden slopes. Can it still be a driveway?

In most cases, yes. Plenty of homes around Westbury-on-Trym sit on a slope, and it is something we plan for. The surface is set to fall away from the house, with a channel drain across the bottom where it is needed, and steeper frontages can be stepped with a low retaining edge. Block paving and tarmac both suit a sloping driveway.

Do you lay patios and do landscaping as well as driveways?

Yes. Patios are a large part of our work, in porcelain, Indian sandstone and concrete paving, and we carry on into the garden with edging, topsoil, new lawns and fencing. Many customers have the driveway and the patio done in one visit so that everything matches.
